In addition to the main news of the past six months, we are pleased to present our latest annual report to you and a video clip produced by the Monaco Press Centre on our international activities.

Once again this year, with Official Development Assistance growing rapidly (+25% per year) and expected to reach 10 million Euros, our activities will be increased and our team reinforced.

Burkina Faso now features on the list of priority countries for our development cooperation, whilst Mali, Senegal and Lebanon will be able to consolidate their position thanks to our support.

December 2009 - Mali - Building of a sickle cell disease research centre
The Monegasque Cooperation, alongside the Pierre Fabre Foundation, has chosen to lend its support to the Malian Ministry of Health to build a sickle cell disease research centre in Bamako. This genetic disease, too often neglected, affects millions of people. This project will enable close to 3,000 carriers of the disease to receive appropriate care and be monitored medically.

December 2009 - Niger - Access to microcredit for sickle cell sufferers
Since 2008, the Monegasque Cooperation has provided funding for the building and fitting out of the national sickle cell disease reference centre in Niger. It now wishes to provide support for sufferers, by means of microfinancing, in order to help them in their social and economic integration. A new agreement has just been signed with the association, Planet Finance.

November 2009 - World AIDS Day Activities by the Monegasque Cooperation
The Monegasque Cooperation attaches great importance to HIV/AIDS. As part of its bilateral and multilateral cooperation, it supports programmes, representing over one million euros, to combat and prevent this disease. In addition to this, a strong partnership has been established between the Principality of Monaco and UNAIDS, of which HSH Princess Stéphanie, the President of Fight Aids Monaco, is the Roving Ambassador.

Offsetting Travel
In 2008, cooperation agents carried out and took part in 65 field missions and meetings. The 387,000 kms travelled by plane generated 181 tons of CO2 equivalent and will be offset by purchasing carbon credit from the Prince Albert II Foundation for a project to harness and burn methane produced by a landfill in Brazil. This project is certified in respect of the UNFCCC Clean Development Mechanism.
Emergency Humanitarian Aid 2009
250,000 € was allocated to various International Organisations in response to five major crises that hit the world: Support for the civil populations in the Gaza strip and Darfur, tropical storms in Madagascar, the earthquake in Italy and, more recently, the passage of Cyclone Ida in El Salvador.
 
 
November 2009 - Mozambique - A marine protected area proposed for UNESCO world heritage
Since 2007, the Monegasque Cooperation, in cooperation with the Peace Parks Foundation, has supported the creation and development of a marine area located between Ponta do Ouro and Kosy Bay covering a coastline of 110 km. This marine area has just been proposed for inclusion on UNESCO’s world heritage list. This is a first for Africa.

October 2009 - A Monegasque delegation attends the launch of the "Cotonou Appeal" against fake medicines
On the initiative of the Chirac Foundation and on the invitation of the President of Benin, Yayi Boni, a high level meeting focused on combating fake medicines was held in Cotonou, the capital of Benin, on 12th October 2009.

October 2009 - Madagascar - Partnership between the Principalities of Monaco and Andorra in support of women
The Principalities of Andorra and Monaco have just signed an agreement with the United Nations Population Fund and the World Food Programme to reduce the vulnerability of women of reproductive age in Madagascar. The programme is innovative and effective since it is being implemented by two United Nations agencies and financed by two small-sized States.

September 2009 - Burkina Faso - Cooperation renewed in the field of civil protection
On 28th September 2009, Mr Paul Masseron, Government Counsellor for the Interior, officially handed over the reconditioned vehicles from the Monaco Fire Brigade to the Burkina Faso National Fire Brigade, in the presence of H.E. Mr Clément P. Sawadogo, Burkina Faso’s Minister of territorial administration and decentralisation. On this occasion, a new memorandum of understanding was signed for a three-year period.

Training courses for Monegasque NGOs
In 2009, the cooperation organised 4 training courses on the following subjects: Human resource management, microfinance and financial resource management. New sessions will be set up in 2010 on fundraising, project assessment and capacity building for the organisations involved.
International Voluntary Workers of Monaco (VIM)
As the end of 2009 approaches, 7 VIM are working in the field and another 2 are currently being hired for positions in Senegal and Mali. In 2010, at least 2 new young volunteers will be hired via calls for candidates in the Journal Officiel de Monaco.
 
 
September 2009 - The Principality of Monaco develops its cooperation in the micro-finance sector
The Principality of Monaco has just signed a new agreement with the Luxembourgish NGO ‘Appui au Développement Autonome’ – ADA (Support for Autonomous Development) specialised in micro-finance, an instrument used by the Monegasque Directorate for International Cooperation (DCI) in its programmes fighting poverty.

September 2009 - Mongolie - La Coopération monégasque renforce sa coopération
The Monegasque Cooperation is developing cooperation in Mongolia. In addition to culture, health now features among the areas of intervention covered, with improved access to decent quality care for the Arkhangai population

August 2009 - Tunisie - A new look for the Nefta Basket
The result of three years work, the Ras el Aïn Oasis has just been given a brand new look, much to the inhabitants’ delight. The Municipality of Nefta received the second Environment Award from the President of the Tunisian Republic for its involvement in the Basket development project.

July 2009 - Kenya - The partnership in aid of the Massai communities continues
For 5 years now, the Office of International Cooperation has lent its support to the Monegasque NGO Wings For Earth (WFE) which supports the Massai populations in certain remote regions of Kenya. The new partnership which has just been initiated is aimed at providing support in the health, educational and economic sectors.

Visit of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince to Senegal
H.S.H. Prince Albert II made an official visit to Dakar from 8th to 10th November. In addition to his official schedule, the Prince visited the cooperation project conducted in partnership with INSERM to fight against bilharziasis, the most widespread parasitic disease in the developing countries after malaria.

Mali invited to take part in the 21st International Fair of Monaco
After Morocco and Burkina Faso, the Monegasque Cooperation invited Mali, through its association “Routes du Sud” to come and exhibit garments, fabrics, pictures and jewellery made from fair-trade organic cotton. This initiative was noticed by H.S.H. Prince Albert II who visited the stand and held a lengthy conversation with the President of the association, Awa Meité.
