The beginning of 2010 was marked by the violent earthquake that hit Haiti on 12th January.
3 months after the disaster, on the initiative of H.S.H. the Sovereign Prince, the Principality of Monaco continues its efforts: over 800,000 euros have been raised through Monaco Collectif Haiti and a Monegasque delegation will be visiting Haiti from 21st to 25th April 2010 to identify reconstruction projects (see insert devoted to Monaco Collectif Haiti at the bottom of the page).
In addition to this is a piece of news that is particularly rewarding for the Monegasque Cooperation, which you can read about in the overview of the first three months of the year below.

March 2010 - Signing of four agreements in matters of Health |
In the presence of H.S.H. Prince Albert II and the Minister of State, H.E. Mr Franck Biancheri, Government Counsellor for External Relations and International Economic and Financial Affairs, has signed fouragreements with Monaco's main health establishments. These agreements fall within the scope of the Government of Monaco's cooperation development policy, which has made health its priority area of intervention.

March 2010 - Successful initial results for the public-private partnership commission |
On 10th March, the Office of International Cooperation and the Chamber of Economic Development convened thirty or so Monegasque companies, active on the African continent, to make an initial assessment of the public-private partnership commission launched in September 2008. Concrete examples of official development assistance projects initiated by this commission were presented and new synergy is expected.

March 2010 - 8th March: International Women's Day - Women at the heart of the Government of Monaco's Development Cooperation Policy |
The Monegasque Cooperation targets primarily women, the mainspring for development, in the least developed countries. Income-generating activities, microcredit, maternal and child welfare, literacy programmes, training, the fight against excision are examples of programmes implemented to promote their condition and help them escape the poverty trap.

February 2010 - UNDP – Contribution to trust fund for innovative partners |
The Monegasque Cooperation has just renewed the UNDP Agreement on the Contribution to the Trust Fund for Innovative Partners. This contribution will provide financial support to the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty (WACAP) and to its "Web Cities" micro-finance project geared towards supporting vulnerable women on the African continent.

February 2010 - Mali - Millenium Village |
A tripartite convention has just been signed between the Monegasque government, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Earth Institute of New York's Columbia University. It aims to protect the environment and biodiversity in Mali whilst contributing to the development of village communities through the "Millennium Village" pilot project.

February 2010 - Mali - Fight against sickle cell disease opening of a reference centre |
On 21st January 2010, the Monegasque Cooperation, alongside the Pierre Fabre Foundation, officially opened the sickle cell disease national reference centre, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Mali. This genetic disease, too often neglected, affects millions of people. The centre, in addition to its research and training activities, will enable 3,000 carriers of the disease to get appropriate treatment.

NGO-Government: 15th coordination meeting
The annual working session and meeting between the Monegasque Cooperation and non-profit organisations working in the humanitarian and development sectors took place on 13th March. Thirty or so Monegasque NGOs and service clubs attended the event. On the programme: cooperation policy, partnerships, welcome to new organisations, working methods and synergy. |

22nd March 2010, World Water Day  Projects implemented by the Monegasque Cooperation in Africa now give 170,000 people access to drinking water. Focus is also placed on the irrigation of cultivated land and the preservation of natural areas. |

January 2010 - Mongolia – Fight against illicit trafficking in cultural goods |
The Monegasque Cooperation is strengthening its cultural cooperation with Mongolia. Following its programmes for archaeological excavation and the restoration of a Buddhist monastery in the Arkangai region, a new partnership has just been signed with UNESCO. The purpose of the agreement is to help the Mongolian Government fight against illicit trafficking in cultural goods.

January 2010 - Mauritania – Construction of a Fire Station |
The Monegasque Cooperation is continuing its partnership with Mauritania in the civil protection sector. An agreement has just been signed with the Monegasque firm, ES-KO S.A.M. for the construction of a Fire Station in the Nouakchott region. The goal is to provide the 100,000 people living in this region with better protection.

January 2010 - Madagascar – Raising awareness and development of a protected area |
The Monegasque Cooperation is supporting a programme to raise awareness of and develop the Bombetoka-Belemboka protected coastal and forest area. The goal is to give a sense of responsibility to the rural communities (over 15,000 people) concerning water use and forest protection.

Monaco Collectif Haïti: over 800,000 euros raised
Following the violent earthquake that hit Haiti on Tuesday 12th January, H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco was eager to unite all the players involved in humanitarian action in the Principality (Government of Monaco, Monegasque Red Cross and twenty or so NGOs) to support a joint project: Monaco Collectif Haiti.
Since then, the Monaco City Council and private companies have also expressed the wish to take part in the project. 
A Monegasque delegation consisting of 6 individuals (Office of International Cooperation, Monegasque Red Cross, Fight Aids Monaco and the Press Centre) will leave for a first visit to Haiti from 21st to 25th April 2010.
The purpose of the visit will be to identify reconstruction or construction projects in the health and educational sectors, in cooperation with the local authorities and international organisations.
